SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Senior Erik Oja and junior Alex McMahon of Arizona men's golf have concluded the first day at the NCAA San Antonio Regional, hosted by UTSA, at Briggs Ranch Golf Club (par 72, 7,247 yards).
With sunny skies and temperatures heating up to the 70s in the afternoon, Oja finished best for the Wildcats in a four-way tie for 11th place. Oja shot one-under with a score of 71, which is four shots off of first place. This marks his 22nd round at par or better. On the back nine, Oja had four back-to-back birdies from holes 11 through 14.
"Erik had a shaky start today," head coach Jim Anderson said. "I think he had to get the competitive juices going again and shake off some rust. His back nine was sharp. I know he feels confident about posting an even better number tomorrow."
McMahon finished in a 13-way tie for 44th place after shooting a 75 (+3). McMahon had four birdies on the day.
"Alex, too, was a little up and down as seen by the number of bogeys and birdies he made," Anderson said. "Both guys are conditioned to stay patient, and we know they have a lot of golf left to make a move. Tomorrow will be more of the same. Hit the ball in play off the tee and make aggressive, committed swings into the greens."
On the individual leader board, No. 17 Julien Brun of TCU leads the field alongside No. 23 Bryson Dechambeau of SMU with identical rounds of 67 (-5).
Round two will begin Friday at 8 a.m. CT. McMahon will tee off at 9:50 a.m. CT from the 10th hole. Oja will follow with a 10:20 a.m. CT tee time from the same hole.
