Officer ID'd in Calif. animal control killing

GALT, Calif. - Authorities have released the name of the animal control officer who was shot and killed while trying to retrieve pets from a Sacramento County home.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office identified the slain officer on Thursday as 45-year-old Roy Curtis Marcum of Elk Grove.

Authorities say Marcum and a bank official went to the home in Galt, about 20 miles south of Sacramento, on Wednesday.

The homeowner, 65-year-old Joseph Francis Corey, had been evicted a day earlier, and the home was supposed to be empty.

But Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos says Corey opened fire, striking and killing Marcum. Corey then barricaded himself inside the house.

He was arrested on suspicion of homicide after an all-night standoff.
