MARANA - Northwest Fire crews are searching a Marana canal after receiving reports that someone may have fallen into it Thursday afternoon.
911 dispatchers received 2 separate calls around 4:30 p.m. from people reporting that they saw a man near the canal, located along Interstate 10, who then disappeared, Northwest Fire Department spokesman Capt. Adam Goldberg said.
Northwest Fire crews arrived at the scene and found an abandoned car next to the canal, Goldberg said.
The callers described the man as having a white beard and said he may be elderly, Goldberg added.
Twelve firefighters have searched the canal from Cortaro Road to Twin Peaks, Goldberg said. They are now draining all of the water out of the canal, which is 8- feet deep.
More crew members are also headed to the scene with special equipment to assist with the search, Goldberg said.
