TUCSON - Dancers have to be at least 18 years old to strip, fully nude, in Tucson and one city leader wants that changed.
City councilman, Steve Kozachik says if you want to dance, you should be 21.
And here's the catch.
Businesses that serve booze, in Arizona, are already regulated by the state, so Kozachik's plan could only apply to dry clubs within the city of Tucson.
A number of women's groups in Tucson are backing the councilmen's idea to up the age limit. However, a strip club manager News 4 talked with is not happy about it.
Kozachik says young women and men can be exploited, "frankly you get into an environment like that, there is psychological, chemical and physical abuse going on."
What do club owners think about the proposed ordinance? News 4 called clubs across Tucson, our calls were not returned. But a manager at 10's Nightclub tells News 4 it's bad for business. And dancers under 21, working their way through college will be out of a job.
Even so, Kozachik says he has the support of Tucson's Women's Commission and has been inundated with supportive comments from parents, teachers, and neighborhood associations.
All of who -- he says -- believe dancers 21 and up are able to make more informed life choices.
"These young women are being exploited and I think it's time we take a step in that direction," says Kozachik.
At this point, the councilman idea is just that, an idea. Although he expects to draft and present the proposed ordinance to the rest of the council in the next couple weeks.
