WASHINGTON, DC - National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre says more background checks and bans on assault weapons won't work.
The statement was made Wednesday during a Senate committee hearing.
"Let's be honest," he said. "Background checks will never be ‘universal,' because criminals will never submit to them."
An assault weapons ban, he said, would hit some of the most popular guns on the market, and cited studies on earlier bans that show they have no impact "no impact on lowering crime."
LaPierre said Americans should place more armed guards outside school buildings.
"It's time to throw an immediate blanket of security around our children," he said.
