NOGALES - Repairs to the busted sewer line in Nogales are expected to last at least two more weeks, and a section of wall is set to be removed to get at the leaking pipe.
A patchwork of pipes and pumps is currently sucking up sewage in Mexico and diverting it through a temporary well on the U.S. side, bypassing the 18-inch hole discovered on Oct. 11.
The plan to insert a smaller pipe into the existing line and heat-treat it to seal it in has been abandoned, and officials now say they will replace a 20-foot section of fiberglass pipe with a ductile iron pipe.
In order to install this new pipe, crews will have to demolish a section of decorative wall, located between Morley Avenue and Robins Avenue, officials say.
Once the project is completed, the wall will be rebuilt, according to Nogales officials.
While Morley Avenue and the port of entry there is currently open, Robins Avenue remains closed until repairs are complete.
Agents with the U.S. Border Patrol are providing security at the site during the pipe's repairs.
