TUCSON - The Santa Rita unit at the Arizona State Prison at Wilmot remains on lockdown. Prison officials have also suspended weekend visitations. This after, a fight involving 200 inmates broke out Thursday night.
About a dozen inmates and some corrections officers were injured during the brawl. Deputy Warden, David Mueller says,"The investigation continues, our primary goal right now is identifying the instigators."
The fight broke out at 5:30pm, within half an hour officers had the situation under control."The majority of the inmates when they observed the staff response they stopped what they were doing and then there were a couple of instances where chemical agents were utilized," said Mueller.
The disturbance was considered a mass casualty incident, because of the nearly dozen inmates and correction officers that were taken to the hospital.
Deputy Warden Mueller says, the inmates involved were Hispanic, African Americans and Whites. He adds, once they get to the bottom of their investigation those responsible will face consequences. "It can range from criminal charges to various sanctions including loss of time served."
Here is a list of the condition reports from the hospitals where the inmates and officers were taken.
At University of Arizona Medical Center, two inmates are in serious condition, one is in critical, one is listed in fair condition and one was treated and released.
The south campus previously known as Kino Hospital says three corrections personnel were all treated and released, one inmate was treated and released and another inmate is in fair condition.
