News 4 Tucson Investigators get action on bed bug problem

Some residents of Park Village Apartments on Tucson's southside say they have constant problems with bed bugs. Lilia Quiroz saved some of them in a jar. The 61-year old day care worker lives in a one-bedroom apartment with her teenaged daughter. Lilia pays $400 a month in rent. She showed us bite marks she says they both got from bed bugs. She becomes emotional talking about it.

Lilia's bedroom has no bed now; she says she sleeps on the floor. Her mattress is on the porch along with bags of laundry, because she says bed bugs were getting into her clothes when the laundry was kept inside the apartment.

Lilia says management has done next to nothing about the bugs. She says they once sent over an ineffective exterminator. Another time the leasing manager, Connie, gave her a can of bed bug spray, which she says didn't work.

The News 4 Tucson Investigators went to the apartment complex leasing office. The manager waved a reporter to come in, but not our camera.

The leasing manager, Connie, had this exchange with the News 4 Tucson Investigators:
"Why are you afraid to show your face?" "I'm not afraid to show my face. I just don't wanna be with everybody."

Connie did tell the News 4 Tucson Investigators that she will send out another exterminator to Lilia's apartment as soon as possible.

We then went to the Pima County Health Department and interviewed an inspector, Gregg Bustamante.

Bustamante told the News 4 Tucson Investigators, "We'll send out an inspector out there to do an investigation, and determine if there is live bed bugs in that unit, and then go to the apartment complex and go that route."

The health department has a phone number that you should call if you want to report bed bugs in your home. It is (520) 243-7908.
