New Year's Eve events planned around Southern Arizona

TUCSON - From family friendly events to places to party, we have all the best spots in town for your New Year's Eve celebration.

For the second year in a row, downtown Tucson will transform into a huge New Year's Eve celebration called First Night.

Cara Rene, V.P. of community development for Downtown Tucson Partnership, says First Night is a family friendly, alcohol-free, arts and cultural festival.

She say this year the event is expected to draw a bigger crowd than the 4,500 people they saw last year. There will be 11 different venues, more than 70 performances and activities like bands, comedy acts, movies, magic and activities for the kids.

"There is such an amazing slate of entertainment," Rene said.

Some of the events are free, some cost money. It's $12 for adults and $6 for kids. Children ages five and under are free. The main gathering area is at the Tucson Convention Center Plaza which is infront of the TCC Music Hall. The fireworks show is at midnight.

Another family event will be happening at the Rillito Raceway. It's called the New Year's Competition Powwow.

You'll find dancers from different native american tribes, crafts, traditional foods and a friendship round dance just before midnight. The cost is $9.

If that isn't your thing, Club Congress is having a big party. Their event is a mambo theme.

Todd Hanley, General Manger for Hotel Congress and Maynards says there will be two bands outside, mambo dance lessons beginning at 8 pm and a ball drop, in this case a pineapple at midnight.

"Champagne toast at midnight, pineapple drop with a countdown, there's not a better party in town," Hanley said.

Hanley says they typically sell out every year. The cost is $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

If you're looking for something a little more formal the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort and Spa is having a New Year's Eve Jazz All-Stars Gala. It's a four-course dinner, two jazz shows, dancing and a champagne toast. The cost is $189.

Also the Tucson Symphony will perform at the Arizona Inn. For $195 you will get a five course dinner and open bar.
