TUCSON - You might think cigarette smoke coming from your neighbor's apartment isn't hurting you, well think again.

In a study by the New England Journal of Medicine, the levels of second hand smoke in public housing complexes can be harmful to your health. Therefore, they say, a smoking ban should be considered.

"You're talking about a very unique population of individuals in a small confined area and any smoke is really going to permeate through that building over time," said Bill Pfiefer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association of Arizona.

Some recognize the effects of smoking but feel a smoking ban isn't the best solution. "You should be allowed to smoke right there if you're paying the rent, and you shouldn't have to worry about other people," said Daniel Baunguld.

Others agree on the idea to implement a ban in the future. "I think it's a good idea because it can be harmful to people," said Tamica Moreno.

Doctors at Tucson Medical Center said second hand smoking is very harmful. "The non-smokers in a multi-unit housing complex are unfortunate victims of second hand smoke," said Dr. Keith Kaback.

And even though this ban may be just an idea right now, the American Lung Association said it could be beneficial.

"I believe it will be something in the future for Arizona whether it's done statewide or through local cities or even through voluntary measures," said Pfiefer.
