TUCSON - Ground will be broken tomorrow on a new bridge that will connect the Modern Streetcar from the area west of Interstate 10 to Downtown.
The 320-foot-long Cushing Street Bridge will have one lane of traffic in each direction, two bicycle lanes, Modern Streetcar tracks in each direction, shaded pedestrian walkways and public art, according to a release form the City of Tucson.
"The innovative project is a vital link in the 3.9 mile Modern Streetcar project that will connect riders from the University of Arizona, through downtown to Tucson's West Side, which is Tucson's historic birthplace and the current focus of redevelopment activity and investment," the release states.
Work has already begun, and the bridge is scheduled to be complete in 12 months. Impact to traffic will be minimal, but there will be a detour in place for those who use the east side of Santa Cruz River Linear Park.
Tomorrow's groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 8:30 a.m. on the west bank of the Santa Cruz River South of Congress Street.
