TUCSON - When news hit the neighborhood where Sergeant Robert Carpenter lives, one neighbor immediately began to pray for the Sergeant and his family.

"We will try to do everything we can to help them and do what we can and pray for them."

The suspect remains at large, so News 4 is not identifying the neighbor.

She is beginning to knit a prayer shawl, "He can use it to give him hope that god will be with him, and bless him and show him his way. And he'll be o-k."

Her church does this for the military for those who are in the hospital and for those who need strength and guidance. Each row she knits has a meaning, "We pray, we put Father and Son and Holy Ghost in different rows."

She and her husband have known the Carpenters for a few years.

They have nothing but praise for Sergeant Carpenter, his wife and children.

His wife a good cook always sharing, "Like she made applesauce one day she brought that over, the little girl did. My mom made that and also she loves to bake and she made banana bread she brought that over."

Now the neighbor says she will do her part for Sergeant Carpenter a man who took a bullet protecting the public. "He can make it he's strong enough and he just has to believe that."

Prayers and support also go out to the officers of the midtown substation where Sergeant Carpenter works. That's where he supervises the officers on the midnight shift.

Sgt. Carpenter is a 12 year veteran of the police department.

The Tucson Police Department is urging anyone who may have heard the shooting this morning to call police. They say the information could be vital to helping them identify the shooter.
