TUCSON - The PTA president for Steele Elementary has been arrested on voyeurism charges after getting caught trying to take pictures of a teen in a dressing room.
Aaron Garibay was arrested following an incident on April 13, a search warrant obtained by N4T Investigators shows. Parents at the school are outraged TUSD didn't tell them about the arrest.
"We know Aaron," parent Michael Harvey said. "We have nothing but good things to say about him."
On April 13, Tucson Police were called to a thrift store by a mom of a 17-year-old girl, according to a search warrant obtained by N4T Investigators. As the teen was trying on clothes, she noticed someone in the next dressing room pointing a cell phone at her from above.
Detectives say security video shows Garibay entering the dressing rooms without any merchandise to try on.
N4T Investigators learned the accused voyeur lives only blocks away from Steele Elementary
"I'm a little shocked," Laurie Asbury, who serves on the Steele Elementary PTA board, said. Asbury says she had no idea Garibay was arrested over a week ago. Other parents expressed similar surprise that they weren't notified.
"It is a little shocking that we weren't notified," parent Michael Harvey said.
We reached out to TUSD to find out why parents haven't been notified about the arrest. They sent the following statement:
"TUSD has just been made aware through the media of this person's arrest. It does not appear that this incident is in any way related to Steele Elementary School. The PTA would have to determine the role of the president and how they would handle this within their organization as it's an entity outside of the school. The PTA President's role on campus is that of a parent and that person is not a district employee that is in the classroom. TUSD will look further into this incident to learn more about the situation and inform the school as appropriate."
N4T Investigators went to Garibay's home. A woman who didn't identify herself answered and said Garibay wasn't home.
The News 4 Tucson Investigators have not located Garibay for a statement, but we did look into his background. Garibay doesn't have a criminal history, just a few traffic violations.
