PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police announced Thursday they have arrested the mother of a dead newborn found in a trash can early Monday.

Police arrested and booked 24-year-old Brittney Williams into Maricopa County Jail on one count of first degree murder and one count of child abuse.

The newborn was pronounced dead by the Phoenix Fire Department after family members tried to transport the infant to the hospital.

Phoenix police homicide investigators have probable cause to believe the newborn was born alive and Williams had knowledge of it.

Police said that after spending time with the child in her residence, Williams took the infant to a vacant home down the street and placed her in a trash dumpster near 19th Avenue and Roeser Road in south Phoenix.
