Monument Fire increases flood risk to nearby areas

SIERRA VISTA - Incident officials are advising those near the Monument Fire to be aware of the increased risks of flood and mudflow on their properties.

"Large-scale wildfires can alter the landscape and ground conditions, which increases the risk of flooding within the burn and downstream areas," incident officials state.

Rainfall can cause fire debris, mud and silt to accumulate into a heavy, "cement-like" substance, which can potentially damage property.

Local government officials have copies of current flood hazard maps, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. A 2008 flood map for Sierra Vista is available from FEMA.gov.
