Monument Fire forcing evacuations, jumps road

SIERRA VISTA - The wildfire burning near Sierra Vista has increased to more than 18,000 acres and is forcing evacuations.

Evacuations are currently underway in the Hereford and Ramsey areas. The Cochise County Sheriff's Department says these are people who were allowed back in last night.

Fire information officials say the monument fire is 18 square miles and is 17 percent contained.

The fire has jumped the east side of Highway 92, prompting a mass evacuation.

1,700 homes are left empty. The Monument Fire started Sunday near the border with Mexico. Flames and smoke have destroyed 40 homes and damaged 10 other buildings.
