MARANA - A mock car accident was staged today at Mountain View High school in an effort to demonstrate the dangers of impaired and distracted driving to Tucson teens.
Northwest Fire District and local law enforcement personnel joined students from the high school and the Health and Medical Science Academy to simulate the tragic events that unfold during a serious car accident.
"These students are extremely passionate about making a difference in their community, ensuring students are aware of the various distractions that can exist and the importance of driving safely at all times," states Stacey Hackett, MVHS school counselor.
"Operation Prom Night" provided an example of the dangers of driving impaired or distracted to around 1,800 teens who gathered at the school's football field to watch.
Statewide, there were 219 DUI-related fatalities last year, comprising 27 percent of the total traffic fatalities, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
"This demonstration provides us an opportunity to help reduce the number of accidents among teenagers, indirectly helping to save lives," states Adam Goldberg, NW Fire District captain.
