TUCSON - The Mistake Peak Fire, sparked last Wednesday in the Tonto National Forest northeast of Phoenix, has grown to an estimated 3,400 acres and is 10 percent contained.
Extreme rapid rates of spread, difficult terrain, limited air support and heat-related illness are posing a challenge to suppression efforts, according to a news release from Forest Service officials.Currently, six crews, five engines, one water tender, two bulldozers, two helicopters and one attack plane are assigned to the fire.
Areas closed due to the fire are expanding north, towards Young, Arizona. It is estimated that the fire will be contained by August 30.
