Missing radioactive cobalt-60 in Mexico has been found and intact.
Earlier Wednesday, a cargo truck lugging extremely dangerous radioactive material was stolen. The suspects ditched the car near Mexico City. That is where authorities discovered the material not far from the abandoned truck.
Juan Eibenshutz, director general of the National Commission of Nuclear Safety and Safeguards, says the radioactive material is a kilometer from the nearest town and so far poses no threat.
"This is a radioactive source that is very strong," Eibenschutz told The Associated Press on Wednesday, adding that it can be almost immediately fatal, depending on proximity. "The intensity is very big if it is broken."
The intensity of the material alerted all law enforcement at the local, state and federal level to hunt down the truck, including the military.
Eibenshutz believes the act was random and that the thieves did not know what the truck was hauling.
The material is used for obsolete radiation therapy equipment that is being replaced throughout Mexico's public health system.
