TUCSON- For the past four decades Ramon Gonzales has collected toys for thousands of Tucson children during the holiday season.
"Bicycles, dolls, basketballs, footballs, you name it," Gonzales says.
But this year his annual "Miracle on 31st Street" toy giveaway needs a miracle of its own. "I'm very desperate, I mean I need those toys," Gonzales says.
More than 10,000 children are expected to line up this weekend at his annual event, but Gonzales says so far he only has about 400 toys and eight bicycles. "It's going to be a very sad moment to tell those children I just can't do it," Gonzales says. "They have to go home empty- handed after standing hours and hours in the cold?"
Gonzales says he is usually able to give two or three toys to each child, but this year he says he'll be lucky if he has enough to give just one gift per child. "I believe children are only children once in a lifetime," Gonzales says.
In four decades he has never had to turn anyone away. He hopes this year he can do the same.
