TUCSON - In a surprising move Mexico's government issues a travel alert to its citizens coming to Arizona.
It all stems from the new tough immigration law that Governor Jan Brewer signed last week.
The approved bill now makes it a crime to be in the state illegally.
Police can question anyone about their immigration status if they have reason to believe that someone is in the country illegally.
Also, foreign nationals will have to carry proper documentation.
The law takes effect 90-days after the current legislative session ends. That means late July or early August.
Javier Flores crosses at the Morley gate, in Nogales Arizona twice a day. He's a Mexican national who has a work permit. He teaches math and science on both sides of the border. He's used to showing his identification daily.
So the travel advisory by the Mexican government is not a problem for him.
"I Mexican but I think we have to do everything good legal under the laws."
The Mexican consulate says 24 million Mexican nationals legally cross into Arizona yearly. Most of them spend money here. They say they issued the alert in part because of the adverse political atmosphere created by Senate Bill 10-70.
Monica Dwyer says, "For something like not having proper documentation or people tourists being in fear of coming into this country and being deported is just kind of ridiculous to me."
