NOGALES, Ariz. (AP) - A Mexican man has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle more than $218,000 in unreported cash across the southern Arizona border.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers say they were conducting outbound inspections Monday at the Nogales port and selected a vehicle bearing Mexico plates for an examination.
Prior to the inspection, the 37-year-old driver reported $23 and 400 pesos.
During inspection of the vehicle, CBP officials say an X-ray of a box located in the vehicle's rear cargo area revealed an anomaly inside.
When officers opened the box, they found two cellophane packages containing $218,130 in cash.
The currency was seized for evidence and the driver from Caborca, Sonora, was arrested and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations. His name hasn't been released.
