Grant money, from filmmaker David Lynch, is letting some kids in the Tucson Unified School District meditate their worries away.
Twice a day, on campus, students at a local school take a self-imposed time out to meditate and teachers say it's working wonders. Still, others think Transcendental Meditation (or TM) is nonsense.
Kristi's Kids caught up with students and teachers at the Tucson Museum of Art School who swear by it.
Katie Samson says, the students are "much more relaxed and calm. I definitely notice a difference."
Jesse Halderbrand used to struggle in math. Now he says, "I'm doing really good in there and my behavior's been a lot better."
The TM teacher, Denise Denniston-Gerace, says "We see that students with bad tempers find it easier to think and act in a more responsible way. Students whose attention was fragmented can focus and read."
Transcendental meditation is done twice a day, for 15-to-20 minutes, on campus.
The students had to be trained in TM. T-M supporters say, the effects are well documented. Critics say, the related studies are rarely conducted by independent researchers. Some go so far as to say, TM is a form of religious practice.
Right now, TM is being offered in three TUSD schools. The Tucson Museum of Art school, Project M.O.R.E. high school and Tucson high.
