Marana woman killed husband, police say

MARANA - The Marana Police Department says a woman is in jail charged with murdering her husband.

Captain Ruben Nunez said police were called to the couple's home in the 8900 block of Palm Brooke Drive Thursday night just after 11 p.m. The victim is 59-year-old Jerry Mayfield and his wife is 57-year-old Toni Mayfield. The couple has adult children.

Nunez said police received a 911 call from the home but said he didn't know who made the call. He said it's too early to tell if anyone else may have been involved in the murder.

According to Nunez the department is waiting to hear from the Pima County Medical Examiner to look at Mayfield's body to determine how he died.

Families in the normally quiet neighborhood are shocked, "this is very rare. I've lived here for almost 20 years and i've never seen anything like this," said Tina Laulusa.

Police do not believe neighbors were ever in any danger. "It's very sad. They've lived here for a very long time too. I don't know them personally but you know waving and having seem them over the years," Laulusa said.

Nunez said this is the third homicide in Marana in the last five years.
