TUCSON - Changes are in the works at the Marana Police Department after an officer was arrested over the weekend. Erasema Teran is on paid leave after she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. It turns out the officer was driving on a suspended license.

Marana police Chief Terry Rozema says he was unaware of officer Teran's suspended license. Their investigation shows her driver's license had been suspended for the last year due to an unpaid traffic ticket from Gila Bend.

He says they haven't had the opportunity to talk to her about this but they hope to do that by the end of the week.

Teran has been with the Marana police department since 2007. She worked previously in Awahtukee. The chief says she worked the midnight shift in the Ina and Thornydale area. "The public has the right to be outraged and incensed that somebody that somehow is expected to uphold the law has violated the law. Regardless they have rights."

Marana town council member Roxanne Ziegler says she understands that but what she doesn't understand how the department was unaware the officer's licensed had been suspended. Given their patrol cars are considered their office. "They've their computer they've got their books, their guns everything is in that vehicle so we need to insure that as they represent the town of Marana that they have a clean driving record."

Chief Rozema is already on it he's had all of the officers licenses checked, and he's also coming up with new policies. "You can stick your head in the sand and just hope it goes away or you can use these as opportunities to evaluate the systems you have in place ."
