MARANA, Ariz. - A dispute about campaign signs that were taken down has one candidate running for Marana Town Council crying foul.
It really is a battle of the of the details.
While the town says the campaign signs for Dave Morales were illegal, Morales contends that it amounts to nothing short of harassment.
Morales and his son went sign by sign Thursday, putting back up what was once torn down by the town.
"This is harassment when you only pick one candidate and it's a candidate that's raising cain with you," Morales told News 4 Tucson.
City officials, though, said it's simply a matter of the law.
The posters in question were a series of campaign signs with politically charged language. Several of the signs did not display Morales' name or contact information.
Morales said he didn't understand why they didn't take down all four of the signs within the series, leaving only the sign that explicitly displayed his name.
"The reason why these signs were removed was because there was no phone number, no contact name for the person who was responsible for the signs," said Rodney Campbell, a spokesman for the Town of Marana.
Morales insists that other candidates' signs did not have the "paid by for" inscription and should have been taken down too.
However, according to a letter sent to Morales obtained by News 4 Tucson, that part of campaign law had been stricken.
Nonetheless, Morales said that because his signs were posted in a series, with at least one of the signs displaying his name, it should have been okay.
"Because I'm creative with my signs, I'm being punished for it," Morales said.
However, Campbell said the town could not just assume that they all just flow together.
"Even if that was the case, he would still need to put something on the other three signs," Campbell said.
Morales has since made the appropriate adjustments to the signs that were taken down, but he still said they should have been left alone in the first place.
