PINAL COUNTY - The suspect killed by a Pinal County Sheriff's Deputy following an armed robbery early Monday served time in prison for a Tucson crime.
32-year-old Matthew Clowers (pictured on the left), spent 10 years in prison for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Armed Robbery from 1999 to 2009.
A search of the News 4 Tucson archives shows the conviction stemmed from a series of armed robberies involving pizza delivery drivers.
Investigators say Clowers and Adam Chavez (pictured on the right) robbed and tied up a clerk at an adult boutique at Picacho Peak before leading deputies on a high speed chase.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu says the suspects ended up ramming their vehicle into the deputy's truck head on. The deputy shot and killed Clowers. Chavez was also shot and is recovering.
Chavez also served time in an Arizona prison. He spent 8 months behind bars for Endangerment and Theft out of Pinal County.
