Man charged with murder for infant death

TUCSON - The boyfriend of the mother of an infant who died last November from traumatic injuries has been arrested and now faces First Degree Murder and Child Abuse charges.

William Joe Blankenburg, 24, was arrested near Tombstone earlier today after Pima County Sheriff's Department Homicide detectives obtained an arrest warrant following their investigation, according to a news release from PCSD.

On November 15, 2011, PCSD responded to University of Arizona Medical Center in reference to possible child abuse involving a 7-month-old female victim, the release states. Detectives later found the infant had suffered traumatic injuries to her head, chest and extremities.

The mother of the child reported she was at work at the time, and Blankenburg was alone with her daughter, PCSD officials state. The nature of the baby's injuries was inconsistent with Blankenburg's account of how the baby was injured.

On November 17, 2011, the mother decided to have her daughter disconnected from life support, the release states.

Blankenburg has been booked into Pima County Adult Detention Center and faces charges of First Degree Murder and Physical Child Abuse.
