TUCSON - Southern Arizona waking up this weekend to next winter storm.

A strong low pressure system digging into the southwest will keep a chance of showers around through this afternoon. The cold air in place will turn the rain to snow at about 3,000-4,000 feet where up to 1 inch can accumulate. That means even parts of the Catalina Foothills can see some light snow to start the weekend.

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect until 5pm this evening for areas above 4,000 feet where significant snowfall is expected. The heaviest snow will remain above 7,000 feet where 4 to 7 inches can be seen with 2 to 5 inches between 5,000-7,000 feet.

Highs today will struggle to reach the 50s for the warmest locations with sub freezing temperatures expected area wide late tonight. Leftover moisture and freezing temperatures means frost will likely be an issue Sunday morning.

Another disturbance moves through Sunday night into Monday bringing another round of isolated rain and snow showers along with a reinforcing shot of cold air.
