Lorraine Mackstaller, MD

Dr. Mackstaller is Clinical Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Section of Cardiology. She has been associated with UMC Cardiology for nearly 30 years starting as the Clinical Nurse Specialist for Dr. Ewy in 1974. In that capacity, she initiated programs setting up the first anticoagulation clinic, the nurse-directed exercise stress testing, and the Adult Fitness Program on the main campus. During her association with Cardiology she has published multiple times on the subjects of nurse-direct anticoagulation clinics and atrial fibrillation. As a nurse, she was in charge of medical, coronary, and pediatric ICU's for over 10 years.

After graduating from nursing school in 1967, Dr. Mackstaller went to medical school at University of Arizona College of Medicine graduating in 1997, a mere 30 years later. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency in June 2000 and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine.

Joining the Sarver Heart Center allows Dr. Mackstaller access to both cardiology and primary care. In that capacity she delivers primary care to the patients in Cardiology in order to fulfill the need of comprehensive care promised by the Sarver Heart Center.

Dr Mackstaller coordinates the medical school Cardiology elective which offers in depth cardiology training for fourth year students.

Dr. Mackstaller continues her interest in women's health through the Sarver Heart Center and has been appointed a commissioner on Women's Health by Governor Napolitano. In that capacity she has the ability to positively change the health care system for women through education and various other programs. Through the Sarver Heart Center's outreach program, Dr Mackstaller often lectures on Women's Health and Cardiovascular risk factor awareness and treatment.

Dr. Mackstaller has four children in a blended family. She is also very active within the community of Tucson with organizations like the American Heart Association as Board of Director, Angel Charity for Children, Inc (past general chairman), Las Familias, and the Medic Circle of the Department of Fine Arts.
