TUCSON - A Sunnyside High School teacher got a big surprise Thursday.
Richard Mayorga is getting the Esperanza Teacher Award for his work in the community and his passion to motivate low-income students to aspire to higher education.
He's the second teacher from Tucson to ever get this award in the 15 years of the recognition.
A committee of former winners, other education and community leaders selected the four winners Wednesday.
They were selected based on the impact they make in students and involvement in the community.
Mayorga has been a teacher for more than 30 years; he is also a sports coach, has volunteered for many nonprofit organizations and church.
In an October ceremony in Phoenix, he will receive $5,000 and the school will get $2,500.
There are four winners this year.
So far, Chicanos por la Causa has recognized over 100 Latino teachers with this award in 15 years.
