TUCSON - Memorial Day is this Monday, May 30, and there are a number of events happening around Tucson and Southern Arizona in observance of this holiday.
Here's a list of some of them:
- Tucson Children's Museum's "Bubblepalooza" kicks off:
"Summer fun at the Children's Museum Tucson starts on Memorial Day Monday, May 30 with our fun-filled Bubblepalooza event. Featured activities include creating bubble art, a UV bubble room, stepping inside a giant bubble, making wands and much more from 9:30am to 12:30pm. This will be a free admission day."
-Evergreen Mortuary, Cemetery and Crematory Memorial Day Observance:
"This year's program is named "The Price of Freedom." The ceremony is dedicated to the memory of Frank W. Buckles, one of the last three surviving World War I veterans. Helen Glass, representing the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame will be reading the poem, "Graveyards at the Bottom of the Sea."
"The event is sponsored by Morgan McDermott Post #7 American Legion. Several other American Legion Posts, VFW Posts and Veterans Organizations will be participating. Enter the Cemetery at the Fort Lowell Road entrance and drive west into the cemetery to the place of service.
"Evergreen will provide hot dogs, soft drinks and water at no charge from 10 AM until 11:30 A.M. near the ceremonies."

- The Country Club of La Cholla Celebrates Memorial Day, May 30th, 2011 with a "Field of Flags":
"Over a thousand flags will be on display around our front courtyard flagpole honoring our fallen soldiers.
" The Country Club of La Cholla will be hosting a Field of Flags and Patriotic Celebration May 30th, 2011 beginning at 10 a.m., 8700 N La Cholla Blvd, Tucson AZ 85742. The "Field of Flags" will feature over a thousand flags placed on our lush grassy courtyard surrounding our majestic flagpole honoring our fallen soldiers. We will also have a "hand-clapping" patriotic music performance inside with apple pie! This event is free, but reservations are required."
-Fort Huachuca Memorial Day Ceremony:
"Fort Huachuca honors America's veterans and salutes fallen service members during its annual Memorial Day ceremony 11:30 a.m., May 30 at the Post Cemetery. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
"During this year's ceremony, we pause and honor with solemn gratitude and deep respect all of our fallen service men and women who have given their lives for our country and our freedom. It is also a time to reflect on our own service to the Nation, our Families and each other.
"Brig. Gen. Gregg Potter, commanding general of the U.S. Army Intelligence Center of Excellence and Fort Huachuca, is the speaker for the event.
"The Widowed Support Center, Gold Star Wives and the Society of Military Widows will dedicate wreaths to fallen service members. A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will read VFW General Order #11. The 36th Army Band provides music for the event and a rifle squad from the Fort Huachuca Select Honor Guard renders the 21-gun salute. At noon, a firing battery from the Fort Huachuca Select Honor Guard will render the National Salute with five canons located on Reservoir Hill.
"Cemetery parking is limited and attendees are requested to park in the two marked parking lots on Christie Ave. and Butler Rd. and use the shuttle bus to the event. The shuttle buses to the ceremony will run 10-a.m.-11 a.m. Handicap parking is available at the cemetery and there will also be a golf cart shuttle for attendees with limited mobility."
-East Lawn Palms Cemetery Memorial Day Weekend Activities:
"In observance of Memorial Day, East Lawn Palms Cemetery will host a weekend of activities May 28-30, at the cemetery, 5801 East Grant Road in Tucson. The events are free and open to the public. Call 520-886-5561 for more information.
• "From May 28-30, the Vietnam Veterans of America Tucson Chapter 106 will display Vietnam memorabilia in a Memorial Museum.
• "From 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, the Boy Scouts from the Papago Chapter Order of the Arrow will place flags on veterans' graves along with various Veteran organizations.
• "At 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 29, the cemetery will provide candles for a candlelight service.
• "Beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 30, the VFW Post 4903 will conduct a Memorial Day ceremony featuring guest speaker U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Vincent J. Hnat, music by Sons of Orpheus and presentation of colors by the Tucson Fire Department. Flyover courtesy of the Air National Guard 152nd Fighter Squadron."
-F-16 Flybys from the Arizona Air National Guard's 1652nd Fighter Wing:
"The Arizona Air National Guard's 162nd Fighter Wing at Tucson International Airport is scheduled to conduct F-16 flybys Monday, May 30, over Memorial Day ceremonies in Tucson and Green Valley.
"The flybys, which will consist of a two-aircraft formation, are scheduled to take place between 9 and 10 a.m.
"The following flyby schedule is subject to change:
. Memorial Day Services at East Lawn Palms and South Lawn Cemeteries, 9 a.m.
. Memorial Day Observance at Green Valley Mortuary and Cemetery, 9:15 a.m.
. Memorial Day Observance at Purple Heart Park in Rita Ranch, 10 a.m.
"The 162nd Fighter Wing conducts flybys at Air Force-approved patriotic observances that honor the sacrifice of men and women who have died serving the United States in uniform."
