TUCSON - If you have a little one and you are around water, there's a new, lifesaving option you may want to explore.
It's called the Safety Turtle, a fashionable wristband your child wears that will sound an alarm if the little swimmer is submerged in water.
"It looks like a turtle so kids are going to love it," says Patio Pools n Spas manager Richard Kariolich. "It's all based on a micro chip that's built right inside this wrist band."
The Safety Turtle works within 100 feet of the console. It can lock in place and parents decide when the child wears it. "You utilize this key which obviously an adult is going to have," says Kariolich.
Trish Tracy with the Tucson Fire Department says water dangers lurk all around the home. She says, "Whether it's a toilet bowl, a bathtub, a bucket, a dog water bowl, a fountain, a swimming pool or any type of water source."
Patio Pools n Spas offers 3-colors. Tracy, who is also a new mother says get this. She says, "The nice thing is, these things are portable. You can link your child's wristband to someone else's Safety Turtle system.
After testing the turtle for her 5 month old Jonas, Tracy says she feels safer, "It's providing an additional layer of protection and it gives me piece of mind that an alarm is going to go off if he is in water."
She says it only takes a second for a turtle-less tragedy to strike, "The time it takes to answer a cell phone is the amount of time it can take for a child to drown."
The Safety Turtle has to be submerged to sound the alarm so sprinklers aren't a problem.
