Kitchen Cops: Mouse in the house at southside Taqueria

TUCSON - Warm temperatures were not required to keep Pima County Health Inspectors from keeping the heat on local restaurants to keep the food they serve safe.

A recent inspection of a southside eatery turned out to be an new version of "Of Mice and Men".

Taqueria Pico De Gallo, at 220 W. Wetmore Rd., received six critical violations. Plates and bowls, stored as clean, had mouse dropping on and in them. Droppings were also observed on the floor and in dry food storage areas. Roaches were also seen on the floor in the storage area. Cutting boards were heavily stained and had gouges in them. Several ready to eat foods were not properly date marked. Cited for six critical violations, Taqueria Pico De Gallo, was given a "Provisional" rating.

Taqueria Pico De Gallo management issued a statement saying, "We at Taqueria Pico De Gallo would like to take this opportunity to let our valued customers know that their health and safety is important to us, that the issues found in the report have been corrected, and that we are eager for our re-inspection, which has been scheduled."

Sir Veza's Taco Garage, at 220 W. Wetmore, received ten critical violations. Cooks were observed wearing double sanitary gloves, removing the first pair and not washing hands between tasks. Several food items tested above the required maximum 41degrees, with sauteed onions at 80-degrees, cooked chiles at 65 degrees and vegetable stew temped at 53 degrees. A large ice bin was severely cracked with broken pieces of plastic at the top of the container.

With ten critical violations, Sir Veza's Taco Garage, was given a "Provisional" rating.

Sir Veza's issued a statement saying, "Sir Veza's team of employees, family members, and partners wishes to extend this message that any and all violations found by the Pima County Health Department on our last inspection are being fully addressed and remedied. We have a long history of compliance at our various locations in Arizona and these reported areas have already been corrected. We will continue to improve our efforts on behalf of the public that we serve.

Restaurants awarded excellent ratings include, Chicago Bar, at 5954 E. Speedway Blvd., Hooters Restaurant, at 6335 E. Tanque Verde and G'day Café, at 5683 E. Speedway Blvd.
