Kitchen Cops: Don Chava fails inspection again

TUCSON - Last week we told you about a tortilla factory that received a "provisional rating."

That evaluation requires a re-inspection. Uponreturning an inspector from the health department found that attempts to correct one violation still didn't pass safety and healther standards.

Tortillas Don Chava received a "provisional" rating on July 15. The report cited that several employees were observed wiping their faces with towels they kept on their shoulders while making tortillas without washing their hands.

The inspector also reported the building was "very hot" and that there were "large amounts of flies" present.

A re-inspection was conducted on July 30. While other violations in the original report had been corrected, the inspector found an excessive fly presence throughout the facility. He also found that doors were still being left open. With violations still not corrected Don Chava, on South Fourth Avenue "failed" re-inspection. Another inspection will take place in 10 days.

Circle K on West Cortaro Farms Road received 2 critical and 5 non-critical violations.

Several food items stored in a walk-in cooler tested above the required maximum 41-degrees. The milk's temperature came in at 47 degrees, burritos 47 degrees and breakfast sandwiches at 50 degrees.

Non critical violations cited floors in a storage area with "built up" debris. A soda machine, floor area and sink had "heavy, slimy buildup." With all violations not corrected during the inspection Circle K on West Cortaro Farms Road was given a "needs improvement" rating.

Restaurants awarded excellent ratings include:
On a Roll Sushi Bar & Restaurant on East Congress,
Mariscos Chihuahua on East Grant
Florizona Grille on South Country Club.
