Imposter changes name in long-running Tucson scam

TUCSON- The Pima County Sheriff's Department wants to alert consumers of a change in a long-running scam in Tucson.

In April, KVOA reported that a scam artist was calling victims informing them of fines and unpaid tickets while posing as a deputy. He called himself "Lieutenant Brown" and threatened to arrest them unless they paid up. He then instructed them to load the money on a Green Dot card.

Now, PCSD revealed the scammer appears to have changed the name he goes by to "Captain McFarland."

The Sheriff's Department said there have not been many victims in these schemes and wants to remind people that they will never solicit payment for any fines over the phone.

If you get a call like this call 911 or 88-CRIME.
