Huppenthal: Arizona should rename Common Core

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona's top education official says the state should stick with implementing the Common Core academic standards but rename them and act independently of other states that helped develop them.

The Common Core standards have drawn criticism from conservative activists who contend they're being foisted on the state.

Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal supports Common Core but says he'll propose changes to the state Board of Education.

The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/1a3FmTo ) reports that those changes would include renaming Common Core and having the state withdraw from the national coalition that developed the standards.

Huppenthal says the standards still would be implemented and that nothing would change in Arizona classrooms.

His proposed new name for Common Core: "Arizona College and Career Ready Standards."
