TUCSON - The starting point for the Pontatoc Trail is the Finger Rock Trailhead, where Alvernon dead ends at the Catalinas.
Because of its proximity to Tucson, it's a popular hike. If you like peace & quiet on your hikes, make sure to start this one early in the day.
Part of the fun of the Pontatoc Trail is the feeling that you're on top of the world. "It's truly amazing. Once you get to the top, you get a panoramic view of Tucson & all the ridgelines", said hiker Ryan Ellson.
Pontatoc's more than just vistas. Hikers will find a lot of wildflowers & wildlife, ranging from birds, javelinas and gila monsters.
The hike itself is moderate, leaning toward difficult. It's 8 miles round trip, gaining over 1,500 feet in elevation. Expect lots of up & down as you head back into the canyon.
A quick heads up for those who like to hike with their four-legged friends: dogs are not allowed on the Pontatoc Trail.
