MADERA CANYON - Improvements will soon be made on trails in the Madera Canyon Recreation Area, Nogales Ranger District, Coronado National Forest.

From July 9 through August 24, temporary closures will be in place as work is done on the Proctor and Whitehouse nature trails. Sections of the trails will be closed for extended periods of time. Closure locations and dates will be posted a minimum of three days in advance at all trail access points.

Work to be completed includes application of an asphalt seal coat to the Proctor and Whitehouse nature trails. Existing asphalt pavement will be cleaned, cracks will be sealed and potholes will be patched prior to placement of the seal coat. The trail directly adjacent to the Whitehouse parking lot will be removed and replaced with a concrete walk, concrete steps and hand railings for the stairs. The trail crossing at Proctor Road will be constructed with a reinforced concrete walk. All concrete flatwork will meet the requirements of the Forest Service Outdoor Recreation Accessibility Guidelines.

The work is being done to preserve trails and increase visitor enjoyment and safety. Pavement preservation is designed to increase the life of the trails. Improvements will increase user safety on the trails, and the restroom at Whitehouse Picnic Site will be accessible to all users upon completion of the project.

The work is being done by Pima Paving Inc. from Tucson, Arizona. The improvements are being funded in partnership with the Friends of Madera Canyon, who will contribute $39,000 toward the $50,000 project. The Coronado's Recreation Fee Program will contribute the remaining $11,000 to the project.
