MADERA CANYON - The Vault Mine Trail has a little bit of everything for hikers.
If you look closely, you'll notice that people aren't the only ones hiking. Mule deer call this area of the Santa Ritas home.
Even though there's still some snow in the Santa Ritas, hikers are mostly raving about the birds. "I don't know my birds very well. I saw a large blue one. I saw a smaller red one with white-tipped wings", said hiker Brian Boys.
"My husband is more of the identifier than I am but we've certainly seen the Mexican Jays, those are the loud ones that are up in the trees. The painted red stark a lot of people love to see", said hiker Susan Tee.
The Vault Mine Trail is a rugged one. Even experienced hikers recommend a hiking stick to keep up with the steep terrain.
A journey by foot is a slow but steady incline through the canyon. If you plan on doing a full-day hike, consider packing trekking poles.
