MADERA CANYON - Over 5,000 feet in elevation, Madera Canyon is roughly 15 degrees cooler than Tucson. These temps make for a pleasant hike on the Vault Mine Trail.
"It's about an hour & a half round trip. It's a moderate trail but still gives you a pretty good workout", said one hiker.
They say the Santa Ritas are for the birds, which is true. But on the Vault Mine Trail, it's all about the flowers too.
Another Madera Canyon favorite is the Old Baldy Trail, which leads up to Mount Wrightson. Make sure you have good shoes for this hike, as well as trekking poles. "They take a lot of pressure off your legs especially coming down. It's a great stabilizer", said one hiker.
Expect a leg-burning hike that gains around 4,000 feet in elevation, taking roughly 5-6 hours.
