Hittin' the Trails 4 You: Family hikes for the holiday break

TUCSON - The holidays are here! With the kids off from school, there's no better time to introduce a child to the great outdoors. Here are some great hikes the whole family can enjoy over the holiday break.

The Romero Ruins Trail at Catalina State Park is home to a Hohokam village dating back to 500 A.D. Here, you'll find an old ball field, ruins of an 1800's ranch house and shards of pottery in the trash mounds.

Another good interpretive hike is the Desert Discovery Trail at Saguaro National Park West. It's filled with signs that give neat facts about the desert and the animals that call it home.

Interpretive trails can provide a good workout, but they're also a bit easy. If you want more of a challenge for you and your family, head out to the Sweetwater Preserve on Tucson's west side, home to 13 miles worth of trails.

Each trail is well-kept, some having a little more elevation gain, while others show off the snow-capped Catalinas. Even the family dog can come along, as long as you bring a leash.

Similar to the Sweetwater Preserve is the Linda Vista Trailhead in Oro Valley. Linda Vista has two loop trails, one 3 miles long & a shorter half-mile loop. All of them show off the beauty of the desert & provide dramatic views of Pusch Ridge and the Tortolita Mountains.
