MESA - Here are some of the highlights at the CNN/Republican Presidential Debate in Mesa, AZ, and what some watching outside had to say.
"Just take control of the border, it is utterly stupid to say the U.S. can't control the border," said Newt Gingrich, Republican presidential candidate.
Gingrich wasted no time bringing up border security in Arizona's GOP Presidential Debate. But perhaps, surprisingly, the subject didn't come up for some time later in the debate. One person watching the debate outside the Mesa Arts Center was not satisfied.
"What will they proactively do about immigration other than the fence, I would like to have heard more about that," said Veronica Countryman.
With Rick Santorum debating the first time as a perceived front runner, Mitt Romney came out swinging. "But while I was fighting to save the Olympics, you were fighting to save the bridge to nowhere," said Romney.
Santorum defended his recent comment about the "dangers" of contraception. "Here's the difference between me and liberals, just because I'm talking about it, doesn't mean I need a government program to fix it," said Santorum.
The candidates debated a list of issues, from bailouts to birth control. Most of the people we spoke to in Mesa didn't feel that anyone won the debate.
"Who do you think won?" "Romney and Santorum both seemed strong," said Wade Cox.
