Federal Immigration agents investigating a drop house found 15 people held hostage, at gunpoint, by several men near Old Nogales Highway and Old Vail Connection Road on Tuesday.
The Pima County Regional SWAT team was called in to rescue the victims, all believed to be Mexican nationals here illegally. Sheriff's officials say the gunmen were also arrested. The SWAT team converged on the property after receiving information from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
ICE agents say someone called into a San Luis Obispo, California police department and reported that their relatives were being held against their will in Tucson, AZ
A woman was asleep in her trailer nearby when ICE agents showed up to help her evacuate. She says, there was a knock on the door, and they were told to go to the kitchen because they were in danger, then they were brought to another area.
Miguel Gamez lives nearby. He's concerned about his family's safety and that of his neighbors. "A lot of people walking around anybody could get shot. It's just a it's a scary thought," he said.
Another neighbor who asked us to conceal his identity is equally concerned. "It's kind of scary for your family if they would've come into your house and be scared for your family."
Even more frightening, it all went down about a half a mile from Summitt Elementary. The school was in lockdown for three hours.
Border Patrol picked up the victims and the suspects. The Mexican Consulate is meeting with them. ICE is handling the investigation.
