TUCSON - The First Lady of Guatemala spent Wednesday afternoon in Tucson.
Rosa Maria Leal de Perez spent about 2 hours at the Southwest Key facility that will temporarily house illegal immigrant children near Downtown.
Then she went to the Greyhound bus station where Guatemalans often catch rides to other cities after entering the United States illegally.
She finished the evening at First Christian Church on Speedway Boulevard. She was greeted with hugs and smiles before a town-hall-type meeting in a room with a few dozen Guatemalans.
Walter Hernandez hopes the attention will bring improvements to his home country.
"She heard everything," he said. "Some people were giving her advice. Some people were complaining. Some others were thanking her for coming by. That's what happened tonight. She came here because we do have a problem."
She will visit Phoenix Thursday and go back home Friday.
