PHOENIX (AP) - A step has been taken toward asking voters to replace or extend Arizona's temporary sales tax increase with creation of a political committee to campaign for a November ballot measure.

The one-cent increase approved by Arizona voters in 2010 expires in 2013. Supporters would need to collect voter signatures to get a proposition on the ballot.

The initiative measure itself has not been filed so it's not known how new sales tax revenue would be spent.

However, backers include a group that supports funding for public schools and the campaign committee is called "Quality Education and Jobs."

Gov. Jan Brewer sought the three-year increase to help Arizona avoid crippling cuts to public services because of budget shortfalls. She's not a part of the current effort.
