TUCSON - A fire in a storm drain caused some damage Saturday night. The fire closed Alder Grove Road, near River and La Cholla to traffic.

Fire investigators say part of the roadway collapsed after being damaged by fire.

Thick smoke and flames were seen shooting from the storm drain.

Northwest Fire says the drainage ditch which runs underneath River Road is lined with black plastic tubing. That tubing and debris inside it somehow caught fire.

As a precaution, Southwest Gas was called to the scene and determined there are no gas leaks.

Alder Grove Road will remain closed until repairs can be made, and fire investigators say that could take several months.

Investigators say a transient started the fire.
