PHOENIX (AP) - Gov. Jan Brewer's office says she has canceled the remaining stops on her trip to Tucson to return to Phoenix because a Department of Public Safety officer was killed on a local freeway late Thursday.

Brewer was set to tour the new southern Arizona DPS Crime Lab in Tucson on Friday afternoon and then hold a press conference.

Her office says she is returning to join officers and DPS leadership as they mourn the loss of 28-year-old officer Chris Marano. He was trying to lay spike strips on a north Phoenix freeway to stop a fleeing car when he was struck by another officer's police cruiser.
