TUCSON - An early morning crash still has section of Fort Lowell Road closed to through traffic.
Around 6:30am Friday morning witnesses say they heard a loud crack followed by several explosions as the power lines along Ft. Lowell between Country Club and Dodge came crashing down.
According to Tucson Police Department a man fell asleep behind the wheel before crashing his small SUV into a power pole. The man was unharmed and cited with a civil traffic infraction but left 9,300 Tucson Electric Power customers without electricity.
TEP crews worked fast to get most of the electricity restored but as of Friday afternoon about 20 customers were still without power and Ft. Lowell between Dodge and Country Club still closed.
TPD says the westbound lanes on Ft. Lowell may re-open as soon as late Friday evening but eastbound lanes will not open up until sometime Saturday. Until than drivers are urged to avoid the area and use Glenn as an alternate.
