TUCSON - Friends and family of Sam Schmid can hardly believe the recovery he is making after an October car accident.
Carter Comstock grew up with Schmid and visited him while he was in the hospital.
"It's crazy," Comstock said. "It got to the point where we accepted that he was gone. It was that bad."
The 21-year-old University of Arizona student is in rehabilitation at a hospital in Phoenix.
One person died in the accident.
Doctors and family members were even considering organ donation possibilities while he was in a coma.
Schmid volunteers as a basketball coach at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Parrish and School.
"The children had been devastated by by the accident," school principal Gabe Keller said, "and now are overjoyed with this miraculous recovery."
He still has many hours of rehabilitation ahead of him.
